Thank you for giving me an opportunity to write. I think perhaps the views of the average American and the average Iraqi are distorted by our conservative government and extremists who claim to speak for the Iraqis. If an Iraqi could visit the US, I think they would find a high level of religious tolerance. I can't remember ever hearing of violence in the US against a Muslim based on his faith. We have had a history of racial intolerance but we have made great progress and struggle with this issue daily.

The idea that we are in Iraq to spread Christianity would be foreign to any American. In my humble opinion, America lashed out at Iraq looking for revenge after 9/11. I did not support the war when it began. Now it has become a fight between Muslim radicals and the US government. The US government wishes to get out without leaving a blood bath behind between Shia and Sunni. I feel confident that if the violence stopped and the government functioned in a representative fashion, the US army would leave.

Muslim radicals, on the other hand, have decided unilaterally, what is best for Iraq. Whenever, in the history of any country, a small group of people decides what is best for a country, it has been disaster. This group would include dictators, emperors, fuhrers, or kings. Democracy is a mechanism to resolve conflict between groups, which will always be, without resolving to bombing, beheadings, and massacre. Democracies rarely go to war with one another and appear to provide a reasonable quality of life for roughly a billion people. Once the economies become intertwined, there are too many economic reasons to keep the peace and the standard of living rises for everyone.

Now that we are in Iraq, and we cannot go back in time, the issue for all of us should be "what is best for all Iraqis" and not just those with bombs and guns. It seems to me that the a prompt transition to representative government would be the shortest path to getting our army out of Iraq, improving the Iraqi economy, and improving the quality of life for all Iraqis. With all the natural resources in Iraq, with an effective government, the Iraqi quality of life should exceed that of the US.

أنني ممتنٌ لكم لإتاحة الفرصة لي لكي أكتب هذا الخطاب. اعتقد أن آراء كل من عامة الشعبين العراقي والأمريكي قد شوهتها حكومتنا المحافظة والمتشددين الذين يدعون بأنهم يمثلون الشعب العراقي. فلو سنحت الفرصة لشخص عراقي أن يزور الولايات المتحدة سيلاحظ مدى السماحة في الدين, لم أسمع يوماً بأن شخصاً مسلماً تعرض للاعتداء في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بسبب معتقده فقد كان لنا باع في العنف الديني غير أننا أحرزنا تقدماً هائلاً وناضلنا نضالاً مريراً للتخلص من هذا الأمر.

إن مجرد اعتقاد أن الجيش الأمريكي رحل إلى العراق للتبشير بالنصرانية أمر غير وارد بالنسبة للأمريكيين, حسب رأيي المتواضع لم تنقض الولايات المتحدة على العراق إلا ثأراً لأحداث 11 أيلول. لم أكن من مؤيدي الحرب حين اندلعت أما الآن وقد تحولت إلى قتال بين المتشددين الإسلاميين وبين الحكومة الأمريكية, تود الحكومة الأمريكية أن تغادر العراق دون أن تخلف حرباً طاحنة بين الشيعة والسنة. أنا على ثقة ما أن يتوقف العنف وما أن تمثل الحكومة جميع مكونات الشعب العراقي حتى يشد الجيش الأمريكي رحاله.

من جهة أخرى تفرد المتشددون الإسلاميون باتخاذ قرار مفاده أنهم يعرفون أين تكمن مصلحة العراق, وقد أثبت التاريخ أن تفرد جماعة معينة باتخاذ قرارات تخص البلاد غالباً ما ينتهي بكوارث. سواء أكانت هذه الجماعة ثلة من الحكام الدكتاتوريين أو الأباطرة أو الزعماء أو الملوك. تعد الديمقراطية حلاً ناجعاً لفض النزاعات بين الجماعات المختلفة ولا يمكن استبدالها بالتفخيخ وقطع الرؤوس أو المجازر. يندر أن يلجأ الديمقراطيون إلى خيار الحرب مما ينعكس على توفير حياة كريمة لمليارات من البشر. وما أن تندمج المصالح الاقتصادية تطرأ أسباب اقتصادية تحتم إحلال السلام والمحافظة على كرامة العيش للجميع.

بما أن وجودنا في العراق أصبح أمراً واقعاً ولا يمكننا العودة بالزمن إلى الوراء أصبح شغلنا الشاغل ما الذي يمكن أن يصب في مصلحة الشعب العراقي لا مصلحة كل من تسلح بالقنابل والرشاشات حسب. يبدو لي أن التحول السريع إلى حكومة تمثل الجميع يعد أقصر الطرق لإخراج الجيش الأمريكي من العراق إضافة إلى تحسين الاقتصاد العراقي والمستوى المعيشي للفرد العراقي. ونظرً لكل ما يملكه العراق من موارد طبيعية وإذا ما قرنت بحكومة قوية لا بد للمستوى المعيشي للفرد العراقي أن يصبح أفضل بكثير من ذاك في الولايات المتحدة.
